چکیده

m a r Terrigenous sediments from Ceara Rise in the western ropical Atlantic Ocean record Pleistocene Amazon Basin cliate variability. Iron oxides and oxyhydroxides in this region riginate mainly from chemically leached Amazon lowland oils. Concentrations of goethite and hematite in the terrignous fraction consistently peak during transitions from lacial to interglacial periods, suggesting an increased proporion of erosive products derived from the Amazon lowlands ompared to the physically weathered highlands. Lowland Amzon Basin precipitation changes, monitored by the percentage f goethite relative to total iron oxides, lead ice age extremes ith maximum aridity during ice growth and maximum preipitation during ice melt. Rapid climate changes over the mazon Basin may reflect shifts in the position of the Interropical Convergence Zone forced by northern hemisphere inolation at precessional (1/23,000 yr) and obliquity (1/41,000 r) frequencies. Variance in the orbital eccentricity bands 1/100,000 and 1/413,000 yr) may be explained by nonlinear mplification of insolation forcing at precessional frequencies. he early response of Amazon precipitation to insolation, head of high-latitude ice volume (dO) at all orbital freuencies, suggests that tropical aridity is part of the chain of vents leading to ice ages, rather than a response to glacier scillations. © 1999 University of Washington.

Manganese(II)-oxidizing Bacillus spores in Guaymas Basin hydrothermal sediments and plumes.

Microbial oxidation and precipitation of manganese at deep-sea hydrothermal vents are important oceanic biogeochemical processes, yet nothing is known about the types of microorganisms or mechanisms involved. Here we report isolation of a number of diverse spore-forming Mn(II)-oxidizing Bacillus species from Guaymas Basin, a deep-sea hydrothermal vent environment in the Gulf of California, wher...

Marine Geology

To constrain the timing of rifting in the western, eastern, and northern parts of the Alboran Sea basin, seismic reflectors, corresponding to biostratigraphic boundaries and unconformities from the Miocene to Recent, are correlated using synthetic seismograms. Regions of adjacent coeval compression and extension are found in the Alboran Sea basin. Normal faulting continues in parts of the easte...

17. Iron-rich Sediments Cored during Leg 8 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project

A sequence of amorphous iron r>xide-rich sediments, interbedded with iron-free calcareous nannoplankton oozes, occurs in the basal zones of Sites 74 and 75 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, immediately overlying basalt. These sediments have affinities with iron and manganeserich sediments previously described from the crest of the East Pacific Rise. It is considered most likely that this sedime...

Non-linear stochastic inversion of 2D gravity data using evolution strategy (ES)

In the current work, a 2D non-linear inverse problem of gravity data is solved using the evolution strategies (ES) to find the thickness of a sedimentary layer in a deep-water situation where a thick sedimentary layer usually exists. Such problems are widely encountered in the early stages of petroleum explorations where potential field data are used to find an initial estimate of the basin geo...

Evidence for orbital forcing of dust accumulation during the early Paleogene greenhouse

[1] The accumulation of wind blown (eolian) dust in deep‐sea sediments reflects the aridity/humidity conditions of the continental region supplying the dust, as well as the “gustiness” of the climate system. Detailed studies of Pleistocene glacial‐interglacial dust fluxes suggest changes in accumulation rates corresponding to orbital variations in solar insolation (Milankovitch cycles). While t...
